German yard Pella Sietas GmbH in Hamburg said it has signed a 100 million euro contract to build an icebreaker to be operated by Russian state customer Rosmorport. It is the largest single order in the company's history, the yard said.
The ship will be 120m long, 27.5m wide, with a draught of 8.5m. The icebreaker is part of the Russian fleet modernisation programme and will keep sea routes clear and also provide pilot service for large ships in ice, plus towing services for ships and other floating structures. It has capability for fire-fighting, sea rescue and deck cargo transport.
The newbuilding is designed for use in the Arctic Ocean at temperatures as low as minus 40 degrees Centigrade. The vessel of class Icebreaker 7 will be capable of sailing through ice up to 2.5m thick. The two rudder propellers are each of 9,000 kW and bow thrusters are each 1,000 kW. In addition to securing the icy seaways, the power of the icebreaker also enables the towing of ships and constructions with a bollard pull of 120 tonnes. In open waters, a service speed of 12 knots is achieved.
The new vessel has accommodation for 35 crew members and 22 specialist personnel who can be flown in and out via a helicopter platform. It is scheduled to be delivered in 2023. Natallia Dean, Director of Pella Sietas, said the yard has been working on this contract for six years.
