The second quarter of 2024 will see China’s Chengxi Shipyard, part of China State Shipbuilding Corp, fit the world’s large ore carrier, the 400,315dwt 2012-built Sohar Max with a rotor sail auxiliary propulsion system design and developed by London-based Anemoi Marine Technology Ltd.

The installation of the five 35m-high, 5m in diameter, cylindrical rotor sails and the sail deployment system integration has been designed in association with China’s SDARI (Shanghai Merchant Ship Design & Research Institution).

Sohar Max is owned by Oman’s Asyad (Oman Shipping Co) and is on charter to Brazil’s metals and mining giant Vale SA and carries iron ore cargoes from Brazil on routes to the Middle East and China, routes which are particularly well suited for wind propulsion and analysing the operational results of retrofitting such systems on large bulk carriers.
