Western Shiprepair has completed a major modernisation programme for the Bahamas-flagged Sea-Cargo AS sister RoRo vessels Trans Hav and Trans Sol, combining propulsion, emissions and structural upgrades in one of the yard’s most complex recent retrofit projects.
The work was carried out in the second and third quarters of 2025 under the supervision of Stödig Ship Management and included new propellers, NOx scrubber systems, hybrid-ready battery and frequency converter systems, and a fully integrated power management system. The vessels were also fitted with about 1,600 m² of solar panels and prepared for future wind-assisted propulsion through rotor sail foundations.
Western Shiprepair also installed a new covered weather deck on both ships, built by Western Baltija Shipbuilding, to expand cargo capacity and improve protection for sensitive loads. Project engineering was delivered by Western Baltic Engineering with Marine Design & Consulting and Naval Tec.
Simonas Keliotis, Commercial Director, Western Shiprepair, commented: “These were far from routine retrofits.” He said multiple major upgrades were delivered in parallel across both vessels, including scrubber installations, deckhouse construction and rotor sail foundations. He added that steelwork alone totalled about 1,500 tonnes, requiring detailed planning and close coordination across teams.
Western Shiprepair said the refit would support Sea-Cargo AS’s target of cutting fossil fuel consumption by up to 50%.
