Wärtsilä to supply conversion kit for Eidesvik PSV
Wärtsilä will supply the equipment for the 2026 conversion of Eidesvik offshore platform supply vessel (PSV) Viking Energy to ammonia-fuelled operation, including a new Wärtsilä 25 engine, a complete fuel gas supply system, and exhaust gas aftertreatment.
If green ammonia is used for fuel, the upgrade stands to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by as much as 100% in real terms. This is a substantial upgrade from the up-to-27% emissions reduction which can be achieved using low-carbon fossil fuels, according to Wärtsilä’s own research.
However, ammonia is a complex fuel with serious safety concerns. It requires a beefed-up aftertreatment process to remove NOx, which comprises a much larger proportion of exhaust when burning. As well as Wärtsilä’s AmmoniaPAC system, which includes various ammonia supply components on skids, the vessel will also be kitted out with a Wärtsilä Ammonia Release Mitigation System (WARMS), designed to burn up ammonia quickly in the event of a leak.
“In just 25 years – the lifetime of a single vessel – shipping needs to get to net zero emissions,” declared Håkan Agnevall, president and CEO of Wärtsilä. “Achieving this will require coordinated action by all maritime industry stakeholders to bring about the system change needed to accept a new generation of sustainable fuels."
