Vuyk Engineering converts Windpiper into subsea rock installation vessel

Vuyk Engineering has completed the basic design package for Boskalis' conversion of the deep-sea mining vessel Windpiper into a subsea rock installation vessel with a cargo capacity exceeding 45,000 tonnes. The vessel has been extensively modified to undertake offshore rock installation work and is expected to become the largest vessel operating in this market segment by cargo capacity.
The conversion centres on the installation of a tower-mounted inclined fall pipe system, which enables rock to be transferred from the vessel to the seabed in a controlled manner. The cargo-handling arrangement combines loading hoppers integrated within the hull and deck-mounted feeder systems that continuously transfer material into the fall pipe.
To accommodate the new operating profile, several original compartments were combined and opened to deck level, allowing direct loading and transfer of bulk material. Cargo holds were redesigned to improve bulk handling performance while taking into account excavator operating locations and hopper bulkhead arrangements.
Vuyk Engineering carried out structural engineering for the modified cargo spaces, the fall pipe support tower and associated under-deck structures. Finite element analysis was used to identify reinforcement requirements within the existing hull structure to withstand the increased loads generated during bulk cargo operations.
The company also completed stability assessments to ensure compliance with applicable requirements for a subsea rock installation vessel. In addition, the general arrangement was developed to integrate hoppers, conveyors, excavators and supporting systems into a single cargo-handling layout. Overflow, bilge and associated piping systems were also incorporated into the design package.
The project has delivered an integrated engineering solution covering cargo handling, structural modifications and system integration to support the vessel's new offshore construction role.
