During a visit to China, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer highlighted UK-based Anemoi Marine Technologies Ltd. as an example of British innovation in maritime decarbonisation. Anemoi develops Rotor Sails, mechanical wind-assisted propulsion that helps shipowners cut fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions by harnessing wind power.
The company, headquartered in the UK with production operations in China, has seen increased presence in that market. Andrew Starforth, Anemoi’s newly appointed programme director, attended the UK Government’s House of UK Reception and the UK-China business forum in Shanghai on behalf of the firm.
Since June 2023, Anemoi has secured GBP 28 million (about EUR 32 million) in exports for installation of 29 Rotor Sails across seven vessels, including four of the largest ships in the world on long-distance iron ore trade routes. Clare Urmston, CEO of Anemoi, says Rotor Sails have helped save more than 91,000 tonnes of CO2 so far. “Rotor Sails offer immediate reductions in fuel use and emissions,” she says. Anemoi conducts all engineering design and R & D in the UK and has expanded its UK workforce significantly since 2020, supporting STEM development and contributing over GBP 9 million (about EUR 10 million) to the UK economy.
