Thunderbird 1, a high-performance survey and robotics support vessel operated in European inland and coastal waters, has arrived at Holland Shipyards Group’s Werkendam facility for extensive repairs after sustaining significant damage to its aft section and accommodation block.

Originally contracted for a structural and interior restoration, the scope of work has expanded into a full technical upgrade programme. In addition to hull and superstructure repairs, the yard is carrying out a complete steering system replacement and renewing the vessel’s accommodation block to modern standards. According to Holland Shipyards Group, the focus is on restoring operational capability while enhancing long-term efficiency and safety.

Thunderbird 1 is part of a specialised fleet operated in collaboration with Fleet Robotics, supporting offshore inspection and intervention work. The ship will return to duty equipped with upgraded navigation, control and crew systems, allowing it to integrate advanced robotics platforms more efficiently.

Located in Werkendam on the River Merwede, Holland Shipyards Group has built a reputation for rapid-response repair and conversion projects, supported by in-house engineering and fabrication facilities.
