Dutch firm Econowind has secured a repeat order from Danish tanker operator Terntank for the installation of eight VentoFoil wind-assist units on two additional methanol-ready hybrid tankers. The deal follows an initial order in May 2023 covering three newbuilds, bringing the total to five vessels and 20 VentoFoils.
Each ship will be equipped with four 16m wind wings. The first in the series, Tern Vik, was delivered in April 2025 by China Merchants Jinling Shipyard (Yangzhou). All five vessels will be fitted with Kongsberg’s K-Sail energy and propulsion management system, allowing wind to be prioritised when conditions permit. The design integrates wind propulsion, battery systems and dual-fuel engines capable of running on methanol or diesel.
“At Terntank, we are always looking for ways to reduce fuel consumption. It’s part of our DNA,” said CEO Claes Möller. “The installation of the VentoFoils and their integration with the Kongsberg system went seamlessly. It’s great to see that the actual fuel savings match what was predicted.”
The lightweight, foldable VentoFoils are ATEX-certified for tanker safety. Econowind said the repeat order confirms growing confidence in wind-assisted ship propulsion. The company has now sold more than 130 units across various vessel types.
