Tallinn Shipyard supports Estonian ferries amid severe winter

BLRT Grupp says extreme cold and low coastal water levels have tested ferry links between Estonia’s mainland and islands this winter, prompting adjustments during maintenance periods at Tallinn Shipyard and its floating dock facilities.
The Estonia-flagged ferry Leiger, operated by TS Laevad, has completed maintenance at Tallinn Shipyard and returned to the Rohuküla–Heltermaa route from February 13th. During Leiger’s yard stay, the Estonia-flagged ferry Regula maintained the mainland–Hiiumaa connection. Regula had been was docked at BLRT Repair Yards’ floating dock in December 2025.
With Leiger back in service, Regula will operate on the Virtsu–Kuivastu route, replacing the Estonia-flagged ferry Tõll, which has now arrived at Tallinn Shipyard for planned works before rejoining service.
The yard says ice growth and critically low water levels have complicated schedules and manoeuvring, underscoring the need for coordinated maintenance planning during harsh winter conditions. The rotation allowed continuity of essential passenger and vehicle services while enabling drydock and technical work to proceed.
