MSR Gryfia is nearing completion of a class survey and repair programme on the Norway-flagged chemical tanker Sten Suomi at its Szczecin facility, with the vessel expected to return to service shortly. The 144-m tanker, owned by Norwegian operator Rederiet Stenersen AS, is currently occupying the yard’s largest drydock, Dock No. 5.
The project forms part of a busy period for the Polish shiprepair yard, which has recently handled repairs and upgrades on four chemical tankers at its quays. While several of those vessels have already resumed trading, work on Sten Suomi only recently entered its final stages.
The repair package includes full hull maintenance, extensive piping work and a partial overhaul of the vessel’s main engine. Yard teams have also carried out maintenance on steering-gear and propulsion-system components as part of the class-renewal process.
The combination of structural, mechanical and propulsion-related work is intended to ensure the vessel meets classification requirements while maintaining operational reliability for its next trading period. Piping modifications and engine-overhaul activities represent some of the most technically demanding elements of the project, requiring close coordination between shipyard personnel, specialist contractors and the vessel’s crew.
Built in 2008, Sten Suomi operated within the Stenersen fleet and is deployed primarily in northern European trades. The 16,619-dwt vessel is classed for operation in demanding regional conditions.
The tanker is expected to return to commercial operation within the next few weeks.
