Shipping Technology launches ST Brain Lite to digitise chartered inland shipping fleet
Dutch maritime technology company Shipping Technology has launched ST Brain Lite, a plug-and-play onboard intelligence unit designed to extend real-time data connectivity to chartered inland vessels, with Danser Group acting as the first operator to deploy the system across its Rotterdam–Limburg container corridor.
The Rotterdam-based technology company said the system addresses a persistent gap in inland shipping digitalisation, where chartered vessels often remain outside full onboard data networks due to technical and cost constraints. It said many operators still rely on manual communication methods such as calls, messaging applications and spreadsheets to track vessel position, cargo status and fuel consumption.
ST Brain Lite is designed as a compact onboard computer that connects to existing vessel systems, including GPS, AIS and cargo monitoring tools, transmitting operational data in real time to cloud-based dashboards and operator systems. The unit is intended for crew installation and does not require complex integration, with remote support provided by Shipping Technology.
The system captures vessel position and planning data, including speed and estimated arrival times, alongside fuel consumption and emissions data. Shipping Technology said this could support sustainability reporting and eligibility for port fee discounts under schemes such as Green Award in Rotterdam.
Danser Group said it will deploy the system across chartered vessels operating its Limburg Express service between Rotterdam, Venlo and Born. “At Danser Group, we are digitising our office environment and operational processes step by step. Being able to connect digitally with the ships we charter – not just our own fleet – is an important milestone,” says Danser CEO Ben Maelissa. “ST Brain Lite will play a crucial role in enriching our data; it brings a combination of quality and scalability. Once installed on board, we have the real-time insights we need to make better decisions, keep our customers better informed, and continue building towards a fully digital operation.”
“A significant part of the inland fleet still operates largely analogue,” explained Donald Baan, COO of Shipping Technology. “With ST Brain Lite, we are removing the barriers to digitalisation and making connected shipping accessible for every vessel. This goes not only for crews and shipowners, but also for operators and chartering parties seeking more transparency and efficiency throughout the supply chain.”
