Singapore’s state-owned ship and rig yard Seatrium has entered into an agreement with the country’s Nanyang Technological University (NTU) to research the application of new technologies, including ammonia, carbon capture, digitalisation and electrification, and provide workforce development.

Famous for its massive conversion projects, the yard will be collaborating with NTU to assist the offshore oil and gas industry in implementing ammonia capture technology, which will be used to avert the risk of ammonia release into the atmosphere, a new concern specific to adoption of ammonia fuel.

In addition, the partnership will be conducting research into carbon capture and storage (CCS) using metal organic frameworks (MOFs), an avenue of the technology which includes using metal catalysts such as platinum for the prevention of CO2 emissions to the atmosphere.

“The Seatrium New Energy Laboratory plays a key role in helping the maritime and offshore industry address global environmental challenges, by supporting decarbonisation and innovating more sustainable models of operation. As a university known for expertise in artificial intelligence and sustainability, we are also proud to be the education partner of choice for Seatrium. We will provide customised courses to equip maritime specialists with the skills needed to tackle the challenges that lie ahead.”
