RINA endorses Silverstream retrofit

Silverstream has received independent assessment of its performance-measurement methodology for the Silverstream air lubrication system, with classification society RINA concluding that the approach is suitable for assessing and quantifying energy savings achieved in service.
The review examined the technical basis of Silverstream’s performance-assessment framework, including how gross and net savings are calculated, the treatment of speed-related effects and environmental influences, and the consistency and transparency of the methodology. According to the companies, the framework is intended to provide shipowners and Silverstream with a common basis for measuring system performance during contract negotiations and throughout an installation’s operational life.
The announcement follows RINA’s Approval in Principle granted in December 2025 for Silverstream’s Air Lubrication System Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) calculation and testing methodology, supporting the use of the technology in EEDI calculations.

Having already granted Silverstream Approval in Principle, we're pleased this review confirms the rigour behind their performance claims.”

He added: “This endorsement is a vote of confidence and demonstrates our commitment to transparency, setting clear expectations and delivering results.”
Silverstream said it has completed 164 installations of its air lubrication technology. The company currently has 19 RINA-classed vessels in service fitted with its system across the RoRo, RoPax, cruise and PCTC sectors, rising to 37 vessels when ships on order are included.
