Swedish fuel cell manufacturer PowerCell has secured type approval from Lloyd’s Register (LR) for its Marine System 225, a hydrogen-powered fuel cell system designed specifically for maritime use. The certification clears the way for commercial deployment across a broad range of vessel types, both in retrofit and newbuildings.
The Marine System 225 delivers 225 kW of clean, low-noise power and is described by PowerCell as modular, compact and easy to integrate. It supports compliance with key decarbonisation frameworks including the IMO’s GHG strategy and the EU’s Fit for 55 targets.
“This Type Approval is not just a technical milestone, it’s a clear signal to the maritime industry that hydrogen fuel cell systems are safe, viable, and ready for commercial deployment,” said Lisa Kylhammar, SVP Engineering at PowerCell Group. “It simplifies the path to zero-emission vessel design and accelerates the transition to sustainable shipping.”
LR’s global technical director, Claudene Sharp-Patel, added that the approval reflects the system’s compliance with stringent safety and performance standards.
In a separate development, PowerCell announced its first commercial sale of the M2Power 250 methanol-to-electricity system to a European shipyard. Valued at SEK 150 million (EUR 13.5 million), the 2 MW order is scheduled for delivery in 2029.
