Pelagus and Belga Marine have used an industry event in Rio de Janeiro to press for faster and more localised aftermarket supply models for Brazil’s maritime and energy sectors, where long lead times and import dependence continue to disrupt operations.
The event, held on 16th April, brought together more than 50 participants from OEMs, operators and technology providers to examine how additive manufacturing and on-demand production could improve parts availability for ageing assets. Pelagus, the thyssenkrupp and Wilhelmsen joint venture, said the discussions focused on reducing lead times, easing bottlenecks and improving aftermarket resilience through local production and digital inventories.
Bjorn Madsen, chief commercial officer, Pelagus, said ageing assets in Brazil created a strong case for life-extension support rather than major capital upgrades. He said operators often had limited appetite for retrofit investment when vessels had only a short operating horizon, making on-demand production a practical way to sustain legacy equipment.
A panel including representatives from Altera & Ocyan, Kongsberg Maritime and Wärtsilä examined where conventional aftermarket models still worked and where imported spare parts systems were failing. Jan Lomholdt, chief executive, Belga Marine, said the discussions had highlighted “a new way to look at supply chains in 2026”. He said faster delivery, lower lead times and local production could cut costs, improve revenues and strengthen operational resilience.
