Russian shipbuilder OSK has completed repairs on the dry cargo vessel Yamal Krechet, which was damaged in a collision with an icebreaker earlier this year during icebreaking operations in the Arctic.
According to the press service of Zvyozdochka Ship Repair Centre, the vessel was repaired at Krasnaya Kuznitsa Shipyard, an Arkhangelsk-based subsidiary. The ship entered floating dock M-32 on June 26th and has now been returned to the water.
Repair work included replacement of outer hull plating and internal framing elements, installation of additional frames as specified by the owner, overhaul of the seawater intake and overboard fittings, hull cleaning and repainting, and restoration of the anchor chains.
The incident occurred in January 2025 when the Yamal Krechet became trapped in ice and required assistance. While the nuclear-powered icebreaker 50 Let Pobedy was performing an icebreaking manoeuvre, it made contact with the dry cargo ship on its port side. The impact damaged the icebreaker’s portside shell plating, but details of the dry cargo vessel's damage were not disclosed at the time.
Following the incident, the Yamal Krechet was freed from the ice and resumed its voyage. Icebreaking operations such as this can take up to 1.5 hours and involve repeated impact along a vessel's hull.
