ONEX leads the revival of Greek ship repair and maintenance

For a number of years the Greek ship repair and maintenance industry floundered in the doldrums, that was until the arrival of New York-based ONEX Shipyards & Technologies Group (ONEX).

ONEX took over two major Greek repair yards, one on the mainland, which operates now as ONEX Elefsis Shipyard, in Elefsina, Attica, and the other on the island of Syros, which today operates as ONEX Neorion Shipyards. Both yards are now major players in the Eastern Mediterranean ship repair scene and are set to grow in importance even more, with ONEX investing USD 550 million in new yard facilities.

On June 4th, vessels undergoing repair at ONEX Neorion Shipyards were the following:

• Tassili II – 20,024gt 2004-built RoPax ferry, owned by Algeria’s Algerie Ferries
• Twinkle Star – 45,750dwt 2006-built product tanker, owned by Greece’s Product Shipping & Trading, Athens
• Ariadne – 11,719gt 2009-built offshore cable layer, owned by Greece’s Asso Offshore, Elefsis
• Portofino – 74,905dwt 2010-built product tanker, owned by Sagittarius Management Inc. and operated by Alberta Shipmanagement Ltd

Meanwhile, undergoing repair at ONEX Elefsis Shipyard on June 4th were the following vessels:

• Blue Star Chios – 13,955gt 2007-built RoPax ferry, owned by Greece’s Blue Star Ferries (Attica Group). Attica has a fleet repair agreement with ONEX for all of its brands
• Tariq Ibn Ziyad – 21,659gt 1995-built RoPax ferry, owned by Algeria’s Algerie Ferries. This is the first Algerian-owned vessel to be repaired in Greece
• Kriti II – 27,239gt 1979-built RoPax ferry, owned by Greece’s ANEK Lines (Attica Group)
• Magnifica – 40,248dwt 2009-built chemical tanker, owned by Italy’s Morfini, Bari
