One dead and eleven injured in explosion at shipyard in Fujian
An investigation is underway after an explosion aboard a vessel under repair at the Century Huahai Shipbuilding yard in Fuan City in China’s Fujian Province claimed the life of one firefighter and left eleven injured.
According to local authorities, a fire broke out aboard a transport vessel at 13:09 local time on August 13th while the ship was docked at the shipyard in Gantang Township. Emergency response teams and firefighting units were deployed to tackle the blaze, but a secondary explosion occurred about an hour later while crews were conducting firefighting operations.
Chinese state media reported that one firefighter was killed, and eleven others were injured, including nine firefighters and two members of the public. The casualties suffered a combination of blast, burn and impact injuries and were transferred to local hospitals for treatment. Authorities subsequently brought the fire under control and launched a formal investigation into the cause of the incident.
The exact source of the explosion has not yet been determined. Investigators are examining whether hazardous materials, fuel systems or other equipment aboard the vessel contributed to the blast.
Fujian Province is one of China's major shipbuilding and shiprepair centres. The region's yards support a broad range of merchant vessels, including tankers, bulk carriers and other commercial ships, and play a significant role in the global maritime maintenance market.
While the operational impact of the accident remains unclear, any prolonged disruption at major Chinese shipyards could add pressure to an already heavily utilised global repair network. With repair and construction slots at many yards booked well in advance, vessel operators often have limited flexibility when seeking alternative facilities for maintenance or emergency repairs.
Authorities have not announced when the affected areas of the shipyard will resume normal operations.
