Japanese shipowner Nissen Kaiun has acquired a stake in Dutch wind-assist developer Econowind. The company said it is considering installing large versions of Econowind’s VentoFoil devices on its vessels. The wing-shaped device is designed to reduce fuel use by harnessing wind power.

“We recognized that Econowind has a mature Wind-Assisted Ship Propulsion solution in the market,” a spokesperson for Nissen Kaiun said. “As one of the market leaders Econowind delivers proven technology. Making shipping more sustainable is a top priority at Nissen Kaiun. We are currently looking into installing the large version of their innovative VentoFoils on our vessels. It is well-suited to maritime conditions while being easy for the crew to use. This technology allows us to take steps in reducing fuel consumption and emissions.”

Econowind has sold more than 130 VentoFoil units worldwide for both shortsea and deepsea ships. The wing-shaped device is designed to reduce fuel use by harnessing wind power.

Econowind Chief Executive Daan Koornneef said: “The partnership with Nissen Kaiun will support the expansion of our VentoFoil product line, including larger units for deepsea shipping. It could also open the door to production in Asia.”

The investment comes as owners seek immediate methods to meet regulatory targets on emissions. Wind-assist systems can be combined with any fuel strategy.

Econowind said the deal will help broaden its presence in Asia through Nissen Kaiun’s network. The Japanese company, based in Imabari, operates a diversified fleet through several subsidiaries.
