New Langh Tech OCCS to be installed from 2025

Langh Tech has released a new onboard carbon capture and storage (OCCS) system designed to sequester up to 30% of carbon emissions from ship exhaust, enabling vessels to meet commitments under IMO.

A by-product of the Langh Tech process is sodium carbonate, commonly known as washing soda, which is mined at considerable expense in some countries, and can be used in the production of glass, in water softening, and in baking.

In pilot tests on a vessel belonging to Langh Ship, a Langh Tech sister company, the system showed that it could capture rates over 80% from the exhaust gas flow coming into the system.

OCCS systems require a great deal of power to operate. In land-based testing, CCS systems have proven capable of capturing over 90% of CO2 from powerplant exhaust stacks, but have required as much as a 50% increase in fuel consumption in order to achieve this. However, Langh Tech claims that its system will significantly reduce these power needs compared with conventional systems, with no solvent regeneration or CO2 compression needed.

“Our onboard carbon capture solution gives shipowners and operators the possibility to decarbonise and balance their costs,” said Laura Langh-Lagerlöf, Commercial Director of Langh Tech. “The scarcity and significantly higher costs of carbon-neutral fuels are a substantial hurdle to the decarbonisation of shipping. It will take time until those fuels can be widely used and afforded. We are here to bridge this gap and help companies to decarbonise efficiently and according to their abilities.

“At the same time, it is important to emphasise that the captured CO2 can also be used in the production of biofuels and synthetic fuels,” she added. “Thus, our technology – if applied smartly – contributes to a green-fuel transition by setting up a circular economy.”

Damen Shipyards will conduct the first commercial installations of the Langh Tech CCS plants, on board four bulk carriers in early 2025. Each vessel will be fitted with a hybrid scrubber and an additional onboard carbon capture system from Langh Tech.
