Navantia UK plans to recruit 500 apprentices by 2030 as it expands shipbuilding, engineering and offshore energy activities across England, Scotland and Northern Ireland. The announcement follows its acquisition of Harland & Wolff assets and coincides with National Apprenticeships Week.
Of 90 apprentices planned for 2026, 35 are expected in Belfast, 20 at Appledore in Devon, 20 at Methil in Fife and 15 at Arnish on the Isle of Lewis. Roles include pipe fitting, welding and computer-aided design.
Navantia UK holds a GBP 1.6 billion contract, about EUR 1.86 billion, to build three Fleet Solid Support ships for the Royal Fleet Auxiliary, alongside commercial construction and shiprepair work.
A GBP 115 million investment programme, about EUR 134 million, is under way across its yards, including robotic plasma cutting systems, cranes and automated quality control.
Helen McTockell, apprenticeship and training manager, says: “Navantia UK is establishing itself as a new force in British industry, and to do that, we’re looking for the very best of talent across the country.” The company aims to build long-term industrial skills to support sustained yard activity.
