The German maritime supplier industry has posted another year of steady growth, recording an average turnover increase of 5.5% in 2024, according to the VDMA’s Marine Equipment and Systems working group. Exports remains a key pillar, with international sales accounting for 81% of total revenue - underscoring the industry’s global competitiveness.
After-sales services contributed 27% of total turnover, reflecting sustained demand for maintenance and long-term partnerships in global shipping. Around 36% of total sales were generated in the European market, reinforcing the importance of reliable intra-European cooperation in shipbuilding.
The VDMA highlights several strategic priorities, including fair competition with China and the reduction of bureaucratic barriers at EU level. Recent developments such as the Omnibus Regulation are seen as positive steps to improve the regulatory landscape and ease the administrative burden on companies.
The industry's transformation is being driven by rising demand for sustainable technologies. Suppliers are increasingly focusing on energy-efficient propulsion systems, electrification, and digital services. “We are moving away from hydraulics and toward electric drives - even in cruise and naval sectors,” noted Dr Behrens of a mid-sized supplier.
Infrastructure investments, supported by Germany’s special fund, are also expected to benefit maritime logistics and support continued industrial growth.
