'Major overhaul' for geological exploration drilling vessel

Geological exploration drilling vessel Mamed Suleymanov underwent a 'major overhaul' at Bibi-Heybat Ship Repair Yard, Azerbaijan, according to vessel owners ASCO.

The overhaul covered an extensive list of repairs: the main engine of the vessel, devices of the windlass and mast, water-oil radiators, piping systems, electric motors of auxiliary steering devices, lighting systems and electrical control and protection of mechanisms and electrical equipment. “The yard also installed three new diesel generators, one air compressor and oil separators,” ASCO said in a statement.

In addition, repairs were also carried out to damaged sections of the hull, internal compartments were replaced and painting works carried out. Parts of the vessel’s hull were cleaned with abrasive sand, as well as the steering complex, bottom and onboard fittings and caterpillar devices repaired.

The specialised vessel, part of ASCO’s Caspian offshore oil fleet, operates at sea for exploration works at 150 metres depth, taking rock samples from the seabed. Working in what can be extreme conditions, communications and emergency services equipment are crucial for crew safety. During the repair works all Mamed Suleymanov’s emergency equipment was replaced with new generation EPIRB, SART, and VHF (GMDSS). “The gyrocompass, high-frequency command and broadcasting equipment was also repaired,” said ASCO.

Improvements were also made to crew’s living conditions, including upgrades to the canteen, sanitary facilities, recreation room and cabins. The vessel passed sea trials and ASCO stated “the vessel has been handed over to the representatives of the Register for classification”.
