Shanghai Lecang Energy Technology has signed a strategic cooperation agreement with the Tianjin Port Free Trade Zone Administrative Committee and Tianjin Port Group to establish a major green and intelligent ship retrofit hub at Tianjin Port.
The project, announced during the fourth Tianjin International Shipping Industry Expo, will see Lecang Energy invest CNY 2 billion (approximately USD 295 million) in a facility focused on the retrofitting of large vessels, including dual-fuel conversions and other decarbonisation upgrades.
Under a "headquarters plus manufacturing" model, the company will establish its headquarters in Tianjin to manage international orders for large-vessel retrofit projects, while developing an industrial base in the port's Lingang Central Zone. The facility will combine research and development of green marine propulsion systems, retrofit engineering services and the integration of core equipment.
According to Lecang Energy, the project will incorporate advanced digital and intelligent manufacturing technologies and is intended to support the shipbuilding and offshore engineering sectors' transition towards lower-emission and more automated operations.
Once fully operational, the facility is expected to generate annual output valued at RMB 4 billion and create around 3,000 jobs.
Liu Yongjiang, director and general manager of Lecang Energy, said: "The green ship retrofitting facility we are building will be capable of retrofitting 20 to 30 large container ships with a capacity of 10,000 TEUs or more each year. Our first order is for the retrofitting of the world's largest 24,000-TEU container ship."
The project represents one of Tianjin's first major developments aimed at building a shipbuilding and offshore engineering cluster centred on green maritime technologies, while strengthening the port's position as a hub for vessel decarbonisation and retrofit services.
