Daan Kornneef, CEO of Jumbo Maritime, expressed the company's commitment to sustainability, stating, "The installation of these mechanical sails demonstrates our dedication to decarbonising and innovating. While there is more work to be done, initiatives like this bring us closer to a greener maritime industry."
The installation is an unusual one, with two Econowind VentoFoil sails mounted on deck, interspersing the vessel’s two cranes. Despite not being fully optimised for heavy-lift vessels, the sails are expected to provide valuable data which will feed into future retrofits and newbuild projects.
Jumbo Jubilee also features a propeller coating to improve efficiency, an anti-fouling monitoring system, and an eco-control system to optimise fuel consumption.
Jumbo’s Technical Manager, Andres Cassanova, emphasised the company's holistic approach to sustainability, noting that the combination of technology and collaboration across teams is key to reducing the environmental footprint. The new sails can be moved or transferred to other vessels, offering flexibility for various cargo requirements.
