Jotun chosen for Italian vessel drydockings

Jotun has signed an agreement with Italian shipowner Ignazio Messina & C. for coatings on its container ships, Madeira-flagged Jolly Oro and Jolly Argento’s drydockings.

Both vessels have operated on equatorial routes in waters above 25ºC, where rapid hull fouling is a major concern. Jotun will use both SeaQuest Endura, a biocidal coating, and SeaQuantum, a silyl acrylate antifouling coating, to prevent the build-up of slime on the vessels’ hulls.

Jotun claims that the hull coating will reduce CO₂ emissions by around 20,000 tonnes during each vessel’s service period, and plans to prove it using digital monitoring through HullKeeper. Once the two vessels are enrolled in the programme, HullKeeper will monitor several performance parameters to isolate the effect of the Jotun coatings.

This potential saving from coatings could be growing.  A recent report by I-Tech explored how idling in tropical waters has been observed much more in recent years, with growing numbers of vessels waiting in queues at congested ports, accumulating greater hull fouling.

Jotun’s Marine Area Manager, Giulia Nebbia, said that Jotun’s coatings would “protect biodiversity, preserve fuel, and reduce carbon emissions,” and highlighted a claimed 10.4m tonnes of CO₂ reductions in 2023 through Jotun coatings.
