Hafnia chooses APC MarineLine coatings for ten chemical tankers

Advanced Polymer Coatings (APC) has signed a new contract with chemical tanker firm Hafnia, for MarineLine chemical-resistant coating systems on ten vessels. The low-porosity APC coatings are designed to reduce penetration of chemicals into the surface of the coating, allowing easy cleaning, and preventing new cargoes from being contaminated by previous shipments.

Benefits of a chemical resistant coating extend beyond this however: for tank cleaning, vast amounts of hot water are needed, generated by the ship’s boilers, meaning a fuel consumption of around 0.6 tonnes per hour for each cleaning interval. APC claims that its coating will not only decrease the time taken for cleaning, but the energy consumption as well.

“Due to its high resistance, high gloss finish and low absorption, [MarineLine] it is much faster to clean meaning it outperforms stainless steel and epoxy coatings,” said APC Global Marine Manager Onur Yildirim. “Those faster cleaning times enable quicker ship turnaround, which in turn can free up additional sailing days, all improving the performance, earning ability and profitability of the vessel.”

“MarineLINE’s superior resistance, ease of cleaning, and ability to switch seamlessly between chemical cargoes were key factors in our decision,” said Mikkel Boesen, Vice President of TECOS Fleet, Hafnia.

The coating supplier’s sales increased by 42% in 2023, APC claims.
