Greece’s ONEX Elefsis to repair two Algérie Ferries vessels
In a first for a Greek ship repair yard, ONEX Elefis has secured a contract from an Algerian owner to carry out extensive repairs to two of its vessels. The Greek repair yard won two international tenders to repair two RoPax ferries owned by Algeria’s state-owned ENTMV (Enterprise Nationale de Transport de Maritime Voyageurs) and operated by Algérie Ferries – Tariq Ibn Zyad and Badji Mokhtar III.
Both ferries, which operate services from Algeria to Marseille and Barcelona, are already at the shipyard. The 1995-built 21,659gt Tariq Ibn Zyad, drydocked at ONEX Elefsis on February 11th, is undergoing scheduled maintenance and a much-needed complete renovation project. Meanwhile, the 49,785gt 2021-built fleet mate Badji Mokhtar III arrived at the yard on February 26th for scheduled maintenance.
The Elefsina-based repairer is also currently working on the major upgrade of the freight RoRo Blue Carrier 2, owned by Greek operator Blue Star Ferries, with work having started in early January. The RoRo was originally bought from leading European RoRo operator CLdN in March 2023 and operated as their Clementine.
The 1997-built 2,309 lanemetre capacity Blue Carrier 2 is expected to operate on Blue Star Ferries’ Piraeus-Dodecanese routes. The former Clementine is only the second freight-only RoRo in Blue Star Ferries’ fleet, the other vessel is Blue Carrier 1, ex Anglia Seaways of DFDS.
Other vessels undergoing repair at this yard on March 1st included:
- Superfast II – 25,518gt 2009-built RoPax ferry, owned by Greece’s SuperFast Ferries
- Prevelis – 15,354gt 1980-built RoPax ferry, owned by Greece’s ANEK Lines
- Artemis – 2,192dwt 1984-built Offshore Support Vessel, owned by Greece’s Asso Subsea, Elefsina
