German Ship Repair Jamaica (GSRJ) has demonstrated its shiprepair capabilities during a visit by the Shipping Association of Jamaica to its Kingston facility.
The delegation toured the yard to observe work in progress, including repairs on the Panama-flagged Fugro Explorer. Key activities include work on the vessel’s propeller shaft, a critical propulsion component requiring specialised engineering and drydock infrastructure.
GSRJ chief executive Martin Rickman led the visit and outlined the yard’s service offering, which includes drydocking, mechanical and electrical works, propulsion system repairs and hull treatment for commercial vessels operating in the Caribbean.
The yard operates Jamaica’s first Panamax-sized floating dock, capable of handling vessels up to approximately 230 metres in length and 20,000 tonnes displacement. Since commencing operations, the facility has serviced a range of vessel types, including container ships, tankers and offshore vessels.
Industry stakeholders said the development of modern shiprepair infrastructure in Kingston represents a significant step in strengthening Jamaica’s maritime sector and supporting its ambitions to become a regional logistics hub.
