Fincantieri and Generative Bionics have launched an industrial partnership to develop a humanoid welding robot for deployment in Fincantieri shipyards. The four-year programme forms part of Fincantieri’s robotics and innovation strategy and will focus initially on supporting specific welding activities in naval manufacturing.
The humanoid platform will integrate artificial intelligence with advanced manipulation, perception and vision systems to monitor welding seams and operate in complex yard environments. Development and testing will take place at Fincantieri’s Sestri Ponente yard, with initial on-site trials planned by end-2026 and operational functions targeted within two years.
Pierroberto Folgiero, chief executive officer and general manager of Fincantieri, said: “Advanced robotics and artificial intelligence applied to industrial processes represent a strategic lever for the evolution of shipbuilding and for the competitiveness of the European industrial system.”
Daniele Pucci, CEO and co-founder of Generative Bionics, added: “Shipyards represent a strategic asset for global manufacturing, which is why we chose Fincantieri to demonstrate how our Physical AI solutions can translate into reliable, safe, and truly useful systems.”
The companies say the project will support safety, productivity and industrial continuity.
