Ferguson Marine proposes workforce reduction amid uncertainty over future orders

Scottish state-owned shipbuilder Ferguson Marine has launched a voluntary redundancy programme that could reduce its workforce by almost a quarter as the yard faces uncertainty over future vessel orders.

The Port Glasgow shipyard currently employs 283 people, including 34 apprentices, and said it expects up to 70 roles to be affected through the voluntary process. Formal consultations have begun with employees as the company seeks to align staffing levels with its projected workload.

The announcement comes as construction of the UK-flagged ferry Glen Rosa approaches completion following a prolonged and high-profile build programme. The vessel is expected to be delivered later this year, raising questions about future work at the yard.

Uncertainty also surrounds a proposed four-vessel ferry contract announced in March. Confirmation of the award remains pending, with the Scottish Government stating that due diligence is continuing.

Trade union representatives expressed concern that workforce reductions could undermine the yard's ability to deliver future projects if additional contracts are secured. Louise Gilmour, GMB Scotland secretary, said: “Shipbuilders need ships to build, so where are those promised to Ferguson Marine? If they ever come, who will build them?”

She added: “Fergusons was once Scotland’s ferry factory with a worldwide reputation for excellence and should be again.”

The proposed redundancies mark the latest challenge for the nationalised shipyard, which has faced years of financial and operational difficulties. The outcome of ongoing discussions over future ferry orders is likely to play a significant role in determining the yard’s long-term workload and employment prospects on the Clyde.
