Fatal listing incident at Tuzla Shipyard

A tragic accident occurred at a shipyard in Tuzla, Istanbul, when the St. Kitts & Nevis-flagged MV Elmes listed heavily to port during maintenance, throwing one Ukrainian employee overboard and injuring four more.

Built in 1997 by P+S Werften Wolgast, MV Elmes (ex-Meroe, Gabri S, Atlantic Provider, Jeden Lotus, OxL Lotus, Palawan) is operated by SLA Marine Co., based in the Marshall Islands.

Immediate actions included site security, medical assistance, and notifications to the flag state, port authority, and insurers. All work has been suspended pending a full safety review.

Key investigation areas include stability calculations, ballast management, lifting gear certification, and human factors such as supervision and fatigue.
