Everllence has announced the successful conversion of the Liberia-flagged Cosco Shipping Libra’s main engine to dual-fuel methanol operation, marking the world’s first retrofit of an Everllence B&W S90 two-stroke unit. The milestone follows successful sea trials confirming full methanol capability for the vessel’s 11S90ME-LGIM engine.

The retrofit, carried out in collaboration with Cosco Shipping Heavy Industry, covered design, engineering, installation and commissioning, led by Everllence PrimeServ, the company’s after-sales division. As part of the programme, Everllence invested in a dedicated 4S90 testbed in Japan, commissioned earlier this year to validate the engine’s performance on methanol under real operating conditions.

“We’re proud to support Cosco Shipping Lines and Cosco Shipping Heavy Industry – and the maritime industry as a whole – In taking this significant step toward decarbonising shipping,” said Michael Petersen, senior vice president and head of Everllence PrimeServ.

Everllence said the project provides a practical model for large-bore dual-fuel conversions, with more than 300 vessels worldwide fitted with S90-class engines potentially eligible for similar retrofits. Petersen added that the achievement demonstrates that “large-scale conversions are both technically proven and commercially viable,” offering shipowners a realistic pathway towards lower-carbon operations.
