The US Navy destroyer USS Truxtun (DDG-103) returned to Naval Station Norfolk on February 4th after departing for a scheduled independent deployment the previous day, due to a maintenance issue that requires immediate repair. The Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer, which is US-flagged, had left Norfolk on February 3rd, but was seen sailing up the York River towards Naval Weapons Station Yorktown, Virginia, before reversing course back to the home port.
Cmdr. Dawn Stankus, spokesperson for US Second Fleet, told USNI News that the return allows the Navy to ensure the ship is at maximum operational readiness before continuing its deployment. Stankus did not specify the nature of the equipment issue, and the delay’s length remains unclear. USS Truxtun was pierside at Naval Station Norfolk as repairs were underway.
The ship’s latest deployment schedule setback comes just three months after it returned from a seven-month deployment that included operations in the Red Sea, underscoring ongoing maintenance challenges facing forward-deployed surface combatants.
