Damen Shipyards Group has completed a major retrofit programme on four bulk carriers for Liberia-based logistics company BAM Shipping, involving a range of energy and emissions-saving systems. The project is expected to cut fuel consumption by up to 25% and reduce emissions by around 90%, according to initial estimates.

The retrofit is the first of its kind to incorporate this specific combination of technologies on a single set of vessels. Key upgrades include the Damen Air Cavity System (DACS), Triton IoT platform, low-friction coatings, variable frequency drives, shore power compatibility, and carbon capture systems. Additional improvements introduced during the project included fuel and oil additives, propeller coatings, and a nano EFX spray for enhanced combustion.

The work supports compliance with the IMO’s CII and EEXI regulations and is expected to extend the life of each vessel by approximately twelve years. Two ships are now back in operation and show early signs of meeting performance expectations. Classification society RINA will confirm the full efficiency gains in the coming weeks.

Financing for the USD 123.7 million project was arranged by Atal Solutions, which structured a supplier’s credit requiring just 15% equity from the vessel owners.
