Crew rescued as Sea Star Tilos sinks at Yalova yard
Six yard workers were rescued after the Greek-flagged passenger ferry Sea Star Tilos began taking on water and sank by the stern at a shipyard in Altınova, Yalova district, on February 18th, 2026. The vessel was undergoing maintenance and repairs when severe weather caused heavy movement alongside the quay.
Firefighters from Altınova Municipality evacuated the workers using a ladder platform after strong waves prevented safe transfer to the pier. All six were taken for precautionary medical checks and no injuries were reported.
The ferry had previously been detained in Çeşme with 18 deficiencies, five deemed serious enough to warrant detention. Problems included issues with ballast pumps, power systems and fire safety. The vessel was released on February 12th and proceeded to Yalova for remedial work ahead of the 2026 summer season on the Fethiye–Rhodes route.
Local authorities initiated lifting and environmental protection measures following the sinking inside the yard amid concerns over potential fuel pollution. The incident highlights the risks posed by extreme weather during yard periods and the importance of stability and mooring management during repair.
