China’s largest shipowner, COSCO Shipping, is to convert four 16,180 TEU capacity containership newbuildings to methanol dual-fuel power, in a move that will add USD 114 million to the vessel's total price. The newbuildings were ordered from domestic shipbuilder COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry (Yangzhou) in 2021.
The latest four-ship conversion to methanol dual-fuel vessels takes COSCO’s containership divisions total to 16 methanol-powered newbuildings
COSCO is also retrofitting several 13,800 TEU-capacity and 20,000 TEU-capacity vessels to become methanol dual-fuel vessels.
COSCO has ordered a variety of methanol dual-fuel ship types from domestic shipyards, including containerships, dry bulk vessels and tankers.
In September 2023 COSCO teamed up with three other China state-owned companies – State Power Investment Co Ltd (SPIC), Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG) and China Certification & Inspection Group (CCIG) – to develop a green methanol industrial chain, which will comprise the production, transportation, refuelling and certification of green methanol for ships.
