Cosco Shipping Heavy Industry (CSHI) is investing RMB 3 billion in a new ship repair and offshore engineering base at Yangjiang in Guangdong province.
The development will feature a 400,000-tonne class dry-dock, a 200,000-tonne class dry dock, an 80,000-tonne class floating dock and seven repair berths. The facilities will target large container ships, VLCCs, VLOCs and offshore engineering equipment. Once operational, the yard is expected to handle around 250 oceangoing vessels and offshore units each year.
CSHI is a subsidiary of state-owned China Cosco Shipping Corporation, one of the world’s largest shipping conglomerates. The company currently operates nine shipyards across China with a focus on ship repair, newbuilding, offshore engineering and conversions. Its network of facilities includes sites at Dalian, Nantong, Guangzhou, Zhoushan and Shanghai, providing capacity to service most ship types from bulk carriers and tankers to advanced offshore units.
In June, CSHI signed an investment cooperation framework with the Tianjin Port Free Trade Zone for another large-scale repair and conversion shipyard complex. That plan involves three docks and seven berths, establishing a new base for both ship and offshore engineering work in North China.
