China’s Zhoushan Xinya Ship Repair Co has completed what is believed to be the world's largest bulk carrier-to-containership conversion, transforming an 80,000-dwt Kamsarmax bulker into a 3,600-TEU containership following a six-month retrofit programme.

The vessel, Guangqi Delta, was redelivered on June 10th after extensive modifications overseen by the China Classification Society (CCS), which described the project as the first major conversion of its type.

Originally built in 2012 as a Kamsarmax bulk carrier with seven cargo holds, the vessel was reconfigured to carry containers through a comprehensive redesign of its cargo spaces and supporting systems. The conversion created 13 container holds and included installation of a new container lashing system, major hull modifications and upgrades to onboard equipment required for container operations.

CCS said the project involved complex structural engineering, including large-scale steelwork, precise hull alignment and the integration of many new ship systems, while ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements applicable to the vessel's new role.

The classification society's Plan Approval Centre reviewed the design package, while surveyors from its Zhejiang branch remained on site throughout the project, carrying out inspections covering materials, welding quality, construction, mooring trials and sea trials.

Carried out by Zhoushan Xinya Ship Repair Co, one of China's major ship repair and conversion yards, the project highlights growing interest in vessel repurposing as owners seek alternative ways to add capacity or extend the commercial life of existing tonnage. While bulk carrier-to-containership conversions have been undertaken previously, these have mostly involved significantly smaller vessels.
