Berg Propulsion has secured a second retrofit contract with Norwegian owner Arriva Shipping after the Liberia-flagged general cargo vessel Norjarl recorded fuel savings of more than 10% following an upgrade earlier this year. The Norjarl project saw the installation of Berg’s MPC800 control system and Dynamic Drive to optimise energy use at lower operating speeds.

After several months of monitoring in the North Sea and Baltic Sea, Arriva confirmed the efficiency gains and has now commissioned a similar retrofit for the 4,183-gt Norbris. “The Norjarl project showed the impact that introducing state-of-the-art control technology could have when an existing ship is designed and maintained to the highest standards,” said Arriva technical manager Paul Helland. “After verifying the gains, we move forward with Norbris.”

The Norbris, built in 2002 with a MaK 6M32C engine, will have its existing Berg ERC2000 system replaced by the MPC800 and Dynamic Drive combination. Berg’s energy and efficiency sales manager Magnus Thorén said the technology offers a cost-effective way to improve flexibility and fuel performance. He added that the close cooperation during the Norjarl project demonstrated how control upgrades can extend the life and competitiveness of pre-2010 vessels.
