Lighthouse Ship Management AS has completed a successful retrofit of its managed, 2008-built general cargo vessel, Terneskjaer, achieving a 33% reduction in fuel costs. The Norwegian shipping service provider confirmed that the Berg Propulsion upgrade has significantly improved the vessel’s energy efficiency.

The Torangsvåg-based fleet manager selected Berg’s retrofit solution to enhance the 81m-long, 2,900 dwt ship, owned by Bio Feeder AS. The project aimed to reduce fuel consumption and emissions, while boosting the vessel’s competitiveness. Terneskjaer, built in 2008, now operates with higher efficiency diesel-electric propulsion, incorporating a new gearbox, two permanent magnet motors, and Berg’s MPC800 control technology. Additionally, the ship’s existing propeller was optimised with a new nozzle to improve thrust, particularly at lower speeds.

“A 33% reduction in fuel costs is highly significant and points to a secure future for a ship which has proved itself as a reliable performer in Norway’s demanding coastal sector for over 15 years,” said Lasse Øpstad, general manager, Lighthouse Ship Management. “Managed prudently, ships built and maintained to Terneskjaer’s quality can comfortably surpass lower carbon requirements and compete effectively for years to come.”

The project also benefited from Norway’s NOx Fund, receiving tax incentives for reducing nitrogen oxide emissions.
