In a positive development for the US shipbuilding drive, Austal USA and Alabama Shipyard have launched AFDM 15, the first auxiliary floating drydock constructed in the US for approximately four decades and the largest structure ever launched from a shipyard in the Mobile area.

The floating drydock entered the Mobile River following completion of construction, marking a significant milestone in ongoing efforts to expand US shipbuilding and naval support infrastructure.

At 211.53m in length and weighing approximately 12,000 tonnes, AFDM 15 surpasses the previous Mobile launch record held by the 187.76-m tanker American Phoenix, launched in 2011. The project also represents the largest launch in Austal USA's 26-year history.

Auxiliary floating drydocks play an important role in naval and commercial fleet support by enabling maintenance, repair and modernisation work to be carried out at locations where permanent drydock facilities are unavailable or capacity is constrained. The addition of new floating drydock capacity is particularly significant as the US seeks to strengthen shipbuilding, shiprepair and fleet sustainment capability.

The launch highlights increasing investment in maritime industrial infrastructure and follows broader efforts by US policymakers and industry to address shipyard capacity limitations and expand maintenance support for government and commercial vessels.

While further outfitting and commissioning activities are expected before the dock enters operational service, the successful launch marks a notable achievement for both Austal USA and Alabama Shipyard, demonstrating the ability of Gulf Coast shipyards to deliver large-scale maritime infrastructure projects.
