Berge Bulk and Anemoi Marine Technologies have completed the installation of four folding rotor sails on the Singapore-flagged Newcastlemax bulker Berge Meru. The 208,000-dwt vessel received four units measuring 35m in height and 5m in diameter at Yiu Lian Dockyards in China in December 2025.
The rotor sails use wind to generate auxiliary propulsion, reducing fuel consumption and associated emissions. Berge Meru has now completed its first voyage to Singapore following the retrofit.
The project follows Anemoi’s earlier installation on the Bahamas-flagged Berge Neblina in June 2024, the first vessel in Berge Bulk’s fleet to operate with the technology. Berge Bulk has drawn on in-service performance data from that project to support further roll-out.
Clare Urmston, chief executive of Anemoi Marine Technologies, said: “We are proud to complete our second project with Berge Bulk, bringing large-scale folding Rotor Sails to another vessel. Berge Meru demonstrates how wind propulsion can be integrated into commercial bulk carriers in a practical and operationally flexible way.”
The folding design allows the sails to lower for port operations and air draught restrictions while maintaining performance at sea. Berge Bulk continues to assess scalable decarbonisation measures across its fleet.
