ABS explores retrofit impact in new efficiency report
ABS has released Retrofits for Energy and Emissions Improvements, an analysis of how retrofit options affect vessel performance, regulatory compliance and project planning. The study builds on themes from the ABS 2025 Outlook and sets out scenarios to help owners compare technologies.
Vassilios Kroustallis, ABS executive vice president of Business Development and CCO, said: “The maritime sector is navigating an increasingly complex web of not just regulations but also solutions aiming to support compliance and drive new efficiencies … ABS is well-placed to support these decisions with industry-leading insight, standards and guidance.”
The report outlines classification and statutory considerations, drawing on best practice from owners and managers to guide decision-making from technology screening through to application. It stresses viewing vessels as interconnected systems when weighing the impact of retrofits.
ABS concludes with a market update covering global shipyard capacity for installing new energy-efficiency technologies. The study notes that retrofit outcomes vary widely with vessel type, operating profile and integration constraints, and argues that systematic evaluation is essential as owners seek to meet tightening regional carbon rules.
