Energy and marine consultancy ABL has gained DNV approval for a preliminary design concept enhancing stern thruster changeover on a DP2 vessel. The company, part of Oslo-listed ABL Group ASA, said the milestone reinforces operational resilience while addressing charterer confidence in DP retrofit projects.
“This DNV approval confirms that advanced engineering solutions can bridge the gap between compliance and operational robustness,” said Juan Antonio Vieiros Cañal, DP lead Middle East at ABL. “As the industry increasingly focuses on DP upgrades and retrofits, structured electrical design concepts like this will play a key role in improving both technical resilience and charterer confidence.”
DP2 vessels with two main propellers and a single stern thruster can face short-term electrical system risks during changeover. ABL developed a fast-response stern thruster changeover philosophy under an existing master service agreement with Egypt’s Maridive and Oil Services. The concept preserves DP redundancy, minimises transfer interruption time, prevents fault propagation between redundant groups, and improves post-failure position-keeping capability.
Tamer Gamil, Egypt country manager at ABL, said, “Our value lies in delivering cost-effective solutions through timely mobilisation of qualified resources, supported by a deep understanding of regional market dynamics and regulatory requirements.”
ABL’s Cairo team led engineering development, simulations, and class engagement, opening new retrofit opportunities for DP vessels seeking to strengthen post-worst-case failure performance.
