Singapore-based Proteus unveils modular fuel cell system
Proteus Energy has launched the Proteus® Maritime Fuel Cell Solution designed for ports and vessels. The Proteus®75, with an output of 75kW, can be combined to meet larger power requirements. The company aims to target sectors including harbour boats, coastal ships, offshore support vessels, and inland waterway craft.
The fuel cell system has been developed together with Symbio France, a hydrogen fuel cell developer. The French company is jointly owned by Michelin, Stellantis, and Forvia.
The technology is adaptable. It can be supplied as a modular power pack, or customised and installed on vessels. It is free of emissions, quiet, low-maintenance due to few moving parts, does not require luboil, and has a fast re-fuelling time compared with battery charging, the company said.
Proteus Energy CEO, Lars Gruenitz, commented: “The maritime industry needs viable clean energy solutions today. We are providing a high energy density solution that is compact and lightweight, which is critical for vessels where space and weight considerations are imperative. This best-in-class system is the logical and most cost-effective choice to help operators make a quantum leap in their decarbonisation efforts.”
The company expects its fuel cell system to be available from the beginning of 2026 following type approval from DNV likely before the end of this year.
