Econowind installs VentoFoils on Uni-Tankers vessel in Rotterdam

Econowind has completed the installation of four 16m VentoFoils on board the chemical tanker M/T Jutlandia Swan, owned by Danish operator Uni-Tankers. The ATEX-certified wind propulsion units were fitted over four days at Rotterdam Offshore Group.

The 124m-long vessel, measuring 124m x 20m, becomes the fourth tanker to be equipped with VentoFoils. The system is currently undergoing classification by Bureau Veritas and is expected to improve the ship’s EEXI rating by 10%, while contributing an estimated 3% towards FuelEU Maritime compliance.

This installation supports Uni-Tankers’ broader decarbonisation aims, with wind power seen as a core element. The project follows foundation work carried out during a drydocking in Turkey, allowing for a streamlined installation process upon arrival in the Netherlands.

“Wind-Assisted Ship Propulsion has clear potential – but its real value depends on how well it integrates into daily operations. Now we’ll be able to test how these sails behave at sea, what they mean for fuel efficiency, and how the crew can work with them in practice,” said Kristian Larsen, technical director at Uni-Tankers.

The system is proving increasingly viable for the tanker segment, said Econowind’s chief commercial officer, Chiel de Leeuw, citing both the performance of the technology and its compatibility with operational demands.
