Deltamarin has signed a design and engineering contract with China Merchants Jinling Shipyard (Weihai) to develop six new RoPax vessels for the Grimaldi Group.

The “Next Generation Med” class ships will operate on key Mediterranean routes under the Grimaldi Lines and Minoan Lines brands. Four vessels will sail under the Italian flag for Grimaldi Lines, while two will be registered in Greece and operated by Minoan Lines.

Each 229m-long ship will offer 3,300 lane metres for freight, space for over 300 passenger vehicles, and capacity for up to 2,500 passengers, with more than 300 cabins accommodating over 1,200 passengers.

Notably, these vessels will be the first in the Mediterranean designed to run on methanol, significantly cutting CO₂ emissions. Other eco-friendly features include shore power readiness, silicon-based hull coatings, and advanced power management systems, collectively reducing emissions per cargo unit by over 50% compared with current vessels, Deltamarin said in a statement.

Design work starts immediately, with deliveries expected between 2028 and 2030.
