Hapag-Lloyd awarded ‘DNV GL Excellence Green Star’

The certificate was handed over during SMM

Knut Ørbeck-Nilssen, the classification society’s CEO, presented the certificate to Hapag-Lloyd’s COO, Anthony J. Firmin, during SMM.
Noting that Hapag-Lloyd was the first container shipping line to be certified with DNV GL’s ‘Excellence 5 Stars’ award in 2007, Firmin said that the company was very happy to continue this tradition. “Hapag-Lloyd will continue to spearhead efforts to make ship recycling greener, seeking innovative ways to conserve global resources and protect the environment.”
DNV GL’s Ørbeck-Nilssen said: “With the DNV GL Excellence Green Star certificate, we recognise Hapag-Lloyd’s commitment to being out in front of the regulatory agenda, by voluntarily implementing a compliance regime that will reduce the environmental impact of their recycling programme. Hapag-Lloyd has demonstrated that their vessels are recycled in a safe and sustainable manner.”
Measures taken by the container line including working together with recycling yards to discard hazardous waste in accordance with ISO 14001 standards and the guidelines of the Hong Kong Convention. The company is also monitoring and documenting the ship recycling process, preempting the stricter rules that will apply under the EU Ship Recycling Regulation from the end of this year.

German container line Hapag-Lloyd has been awarded the first DNV GL Excellence Green Star certificate, a measure of the company’s commitment to the highest standards of ship recycling.
