Work begins on new Mein Schiff series

The keel-laying of the new cruise vessels Mein Schiff 1 and the start of production of Mein Schiff 2 were the focus of a celebration held recently at the Meyer Turku shipyard in Finland.

Present at the event were the CEOs of both the cruise line TUI Cruises, Wybcke Meier, and the shipyard, Jan Meyer, as well as invited guests and employees. Meanwhile the last ship in the first series, the 295m-long Mein Schiff 6 is having outfitting completed prior to delivery.
At 315m, the new Mein Schiff 1 and 2 will be 20m longer than earlier vessels. The extra space has facilitated a substantial redesign and inclusion of various new features. The 111,500gt ships will have capacity for 2,894 passengers, diesel-electric propulsion, a crew of 1,000 and a speed of about 21 knots. They are due for delivery in spring 2018 and 2019.
“Both ships are characterised by innovative and environmentally-friendly construction methods,” commented TUI Cruises’ Meier, “as well as state-of-the-art technology standards. When the new Mein Schiff 1 and Mein Schiff 2 go into service, we will be operating one of the most modern fleets in the world.”
Speaking for the shipyard, Jan Meyer said: “Today is an important day as we are now starting to assemble the hull of Mein Schiff 1 – and our ideas and designs are taking shape. The fact that both new Mein Schiffs are in production is also a sign that we are increasing our production output according to our ramp-up plan,” he added.
